Mexico and Guatemala: the trips that made me a traveller

What is the journey that changed your life?

Definitely Mexico, when I was 8 years old. I was with my family, we were travelling by bus from one side of the country, in an absolutely free, very pleasant way, far from any pre-established itinerary.

We lived for about a month in close contact with the locals.

Afterwards, we continued our journey to Guatemala, including to areas that were very risky at the time. I have a vivid memory of Lake Atitlán.

I remember playing with the young daughters of the women weaving in the street markets.

This journey has increased the desire in me to get to know places and people and taught me what it means to explore a place: it nurtured my curiosity about the world and turned me into a traveller.

Another great moment I remember is California, where I experienced every aspect, from the glamour of Los Angeles to Death Valley. A unique trip to create a reportage for a Condé Nast Traveller.

What does travelling mean to you?

Getting to know and understand people. My father used to tell me, "In Africa, you always say hello to those who do not say hello to you, they are a possible enemy".

That is why I greet everyone, and the first word to learn is good morning immediately followed by thank you.
